EFS Inaugurates Youth Basketball League in Bluefields

08 June 2014

FADCANIC´s Education for Success Program (EFS) inaugurated its first youth basketball league this last May 30 in Bluefields, with an parade that went from the Obelisk on Aberdeen Street to the newly refurbished community sports center in Barrio Fátima, blessings from the Reverend Harlan Wilson, the ceremonial first basket thrown by EFS Public and Private Specialist Annette Fenton, and a speech of welcome by EFS Life Skills Specialist Dominga Hernández.

This league is part of the program of community sports that EFS promotes to strengthen life skills of disadvantaged and at risk children and youth in five coastal municipalities of the RAAS. The tournament involves teams from four high schools besides one from the National Technological Institute (INATEC in Spanish) and another team made up by out of school youth who attending EFS vocational courses.

In her speech Hernández emphasized the key messages of the life skills program. "Give the best of yourselves; it breeds self esteem,” she exhorted.

Hernández also spoke about the constant application and discipline required to be excellent ―"Don't worry if you don´t get it right the first time. Keep on trying and will get skills”―, about the respect due to rivals―"Because if you have no opponents, who you are going to play against? You have to respect your team mates and you have to respect your opponents too”―, and about self-control as a life goal ―"The same way you learned to dribble, you can learn to control your emotions and reactions.”

Next came the first three games of the league: the Moravian School won their match with the Adventist School (65 to 52 points), the San Marcos School won against INATEC (52 to 42), and EFS against the Baptist School (79-33).

The games continued on Saturday May 31 again with an excellent result for the EFS team, this time against INATEC. The Moravian team also won again, this time beating the Baptist School. The San Marcos, however, fell to the Adventists by a difference of ten points.

The EFS Basketball League in Bluefields will extend over a two month period with games every weekend at the sports center in Barrio Fátima. Support the games. Click here to download the calendar of the games in Spanish.

In 2014, EFS´ Life Skills Program has facilitated the organization of 48 sports interest groups among youth now playing basketball, indoor soccer, baseball, athletics or dominoes in 22 communities across the five municipalities where the program operates. Education for Success is an initiative of FADCANIC funded by the Agency of the United States for International Development (USAID).
